Meta's Twitter alternative is on the way.
Last month, we reported that the tech giant was looking into creating its own Twitter clone. Now, it appears that the project is gaining momentum, with the development of its new text-based social app called ‘Barcelona' taking shape.
💬 The ‘Gram for Your Thoughts
According to an internal prototype shared by an app researcher, the upcoming app is now being pitched as ‘Instagram for your thoughts,’ with a text-based feed of posts that aims to target the private messaging boom.
Social Media Today notes that it sounds similar to Instagram’s recently added ‘Channels’ feature, which lets brands and public figures publish messages to their followers. However, Barcelona is a standalone app that lets users follow others and stay updated on their text updates, much like Twitter.
While it's still unclear when Barcelona will be launched, here's what we know:
- It will be a separate app that uses Instagram credentials for login.
- Your Instagram ID will also be the username for the new app.
- 500 characters is the maximum length for posts.
- Barcelona will be decentralized, though the specifics of this have yet to be defined.
